About us

Well, who are we? and why do we want your attention? The Montague Family Association as a concept originated with Larry Montague, I believe. It originated sometime around the 2000 reunion with Clarence Procop as the first director. Not much happened before the 2005 reunion except a lot of ideas floated about what the Association should accomplish.

The principals, as many of the Montague family members, were interested in our family history and genealogy. There are many , many, people doing research on the family, but there was no central depository to bring together all that information. The belief was that Montague family information and history belongs to all Montagues worldwide.  The idea was, and is, to bring as much information  about the family together, and provide it to our family at little or no charge. The concept was that family will pull together with resources, skills, and financial support to change the concept to reality. At that reunion Warwick Montague from Australia gave a presentation  about a project he's been working on developing a database capable of containing the names of every person to carry the Montague name. Graham Weston was our keynote speaker, getting us fired up about our English heritage. Graham was a great speaker that could really convey a passion for our family history.

The 2005 reunion saw us move forward with the association. We decided to incorporate and apply for status as a 501(c)(3) under IRS rules as a public charity providing education  about this richly historic family.  A board of directors was elected, and charged with getting things to the next level before the 2015 reunion. Last October 2009 we were granted Non-Profit status as a Kansas Corporation. Unfortunately our 501(c)(3) application was denied because our association mainly benefits the Montague family. We didn't want to abandon our mandate, so we decided to move forward without  501(c)(3) status. We've done a lot of work in the last year to get things organized with all volunteer labor, and a very lean budget.  I believe we will be ready to move to the next level when we meet for the 2015 reunion.

In the coming years we will continue to make headway on the family database.  We will expand our efforts to become a hub of available family history. We will support the family DNA project along with other efforts to fill in the blanks in our linage.  This process, while it seems to move at a painfully slow pace at times, continues to move forward and make progress. We're here for the long haul and will continue to give our best effort to reach the goals set by our members.
